One for the Oak Lovers

Strange but true: oak cabinetry CAN look nice!  I know, I had to read that sentence twice to make sure I wasn’t joking too.  I think the raging hatred that exists for typical oak cabinets is due to the fact that 99% of them are usually a horrible faux-oak, (I tried to combine those words into a singly catchy word, but it looked very much like a swear word), very cheaply made and rocking an obnoxious orange hue.

But Renee’s cabinets had actually held up pretty well, as her home hadn’t been updated since the 80’s.  The cabinets were just about the only thing that DIDN’T get a touched in this kitchen makeover.  But even though I think they look pretty great, guess what?  Renee is planning to stain them a red mahogany, which will be even better!  So I guess the oak loses again.  Sorry oak, I tried my best.

Read more about Renee’s kitchen makeover on her blog Love, Life and Living Quarters, and be prepared to be jealous of all the smokin’ deals she found!

  1. Oh whoa!

  2. That’s crazy, they do look great. That color really works in the room. I hope she submits her After for the mahogany staining. (I think I just slaughtered the spelling of that word)

  3. I tried to comment on her blog, but Blogger was being ornery, so I’ll just comment here.

Great job! This is going in my inspiration file. I have an oak kitchen that I would really like to transform W/OUT painting the cabinets. I love the backsplash! Very nice!

  4. That is a fantastically fabulous makeover. Amazing that they don’t even look like the same cabinets once the room is made over in pretty stuff. LOVE!

  7. I love that stone back splash as well!

  8. I have a very similar kitchen stuck in the ’80s (with oak country-style upper cabinets and all). We’ve bought the new appliances, replaced the cabinet hardware and have some money saved for new countertops. This kitchen gives me hope that I don’t have to re-stain my cabinets after all. I too had thought of painting our walls grey, and this also helps me decide what kind of counters and backsplash to go with. I love it!

  9. So impressive!!

  10. Thank you all so much for the wonderful comments! We are currently in the long process of re-staining the cabinets and will hopefully have some after pictures in the near future! Thanks!
