Pretty Pergola

 May 31, 2010

I would like to make a decree to the universe that the next house I inhabit feature a fabulous pergola, like Christy's from Beach Brights

But Christy didn't wait around for the universe, she hired out the work and made her vision come to life herself. She lays out the step by step process of how they added a pergola onto her existing deck — which was then stained and repainted — on her blog, HERE. Thanks Christy!

Pair o' Chairs

This redo came from reader Karen, who found these chairs left behind after a renter moved out. Redos like that are the best, because what have you got to lose? Free chairs?

I love the graphic, mismatched fabric, or more like mix-matched fabric, especially paired with the elegant lines of the chair. What a surprise you would get when you pulled one out from the table, huh? Thanks Karen!

Bye Bye Baby Room

Getting a big-girl room is a big deal, so Brooke's mom Paige went all out. She stuck with the neutral wall color, but added more dramatic fabrics and colors, and my favorite, a new window seat! I would like to sign up for one of those in my big-girl room too, please. Check out more on Paige's blog HERE.

Random Superpost!

 May 28, 2010

There's not really a theme to this Superpost, just a lot of really cool bits and pieces that I have been accumulating. Do enjoy!

First up is a shelf from Crystal at Ready, Set, Plan that went from class clown to class act with the simple addition of everyone's best friend, white paint.

How many of these do you have laying around the house? How many of you realized that old baby wipe containers could be, *gasp* cute? Yvonne did, and created a great little basket for her kitchen counter.

Not to knock the guys or anything, but they don't always strive for style. When Susan asked her husband to build a storage box for extra blankets, she got exactly that. A box to store stuff in. High on the function, low on the form. No problemo, she prettied it right up with a padded cover made from drop cloth and piping. Lovely!

Clara at The Home in Paradise had a favorite pair of shoes that finally gave up the ghost. She resuscitated them with some cute fabric and outdoor modge-podge, which I didn't even know existed until this very moment. So fun!

Tasha at The Simply Staged Home is full of great redos, here she saved an old plant stand that a friend was getting rid of. I love the distressed blue with the nailhead border! I bet her friend is cursing herself for letting all that potential get away!

Speaking of being full of it (great redos, that is) I've said it before and I'll say it again. If you have a super before and after, don't be shy! Send it in! Even if you've already sent me something in the past, or even if I already featured you a few months ago, or even yesterday! I love them all!
Also, don't get discouraged if you've sent something in and haven't been featured. Sometimes I get a lot of similar projects, and sometimes it just takes me a really, really long time to get through them all, so don't dismay!

Taylor at MaryJanes and Galoshes madeover this royally outdated country welcome sign thing into an adorable glitterfied village. They would look so cute lined up in the windowsill of a little girls room, or could make for a snazzy Christmas decoration too. It's not too early to be thinking about that, right?

See, not all guys are lacking in the style department! Brendan fashioned this amazing chest out of old closet doors! Amazing how it looks slightly aged and timeless, and nothing like the plain white stock doors it descended from. See more at BrendanCarpenter.com

Chantal at Haas Home created this animal print rug with paint and a little help from Google images. I think she did a great job! I love zebra print, don't you? Well, if you don't love it, don't tell me, because I don't think I can live in a world where there are people who don't love zebra print.

Jennifer at The Magic Brush sent in this great chalkboard redo a while ago. Quite awhile ago, like, months ago. (See what I mean about me taking a looooong time getting to things sometimes?!) So when I went back to check out her blog, I discovered it has undergone yet another transformation. Head on over there and see for yourself! (Pack your sunglasses!)

That's all folks! Have a great weekend!

Mikael's Kitchen

 May 27, 2010

I haven't posted a kitchen redo in a while, don't know why, they are some of my favorites! This kitchen comes from Mikael at Starter Home to Dream Home

Her kitchen was looking a little dated, with the burgundy walls, oaky cabinets and Christmas decorations. I mean seriously, Christmas was like 5 months ago. (I kid!)

I'm just astounded at the results. It never fails to amaze me how big a difference paint can make, although there was a lot more that went into this redo than that. Check out her blog for all the details. Even her knife set got a makeover! Thanks Mikael!

Whether to Weather

This table was just fine. Not like some of the befores that roll through here, half decomposed with worm holes, modge-podge, burn scars, or a terrifying combination of each. But maybe she looked a little too fine.

She needed some roughening up. A little more character. She needed her shiny silver burnished and some weathering up top, and that's exactly what she got from Leslie over at The DIY Diaries. Check out her blog for an up close look at the texture on the tabletop, it turned out really cool!

Getting Crafty in the Corner

I know I whine all the time about not having a "craft room," and yet, not five feet from where I'm sitting there is an empty little nook in the wall. A little nook just about the same size as the one Stephanie here made over into a super cute craftin' space. I've eyeballed it about 9 times as I've been writing this. Type type, gaze. Type, type, squint. Type, type, imagine cute desk over there.

Hers is a tad deeper than mine, but I guess I don't really do much "crafting" in reality anyway, so how much room do I think I need?! I love the punchy colors she used, everything is tied together so nicely. See more on her blog You Paid More Than Me.

What's that? What did you say? Did you say something about wanting to see some sofas that would set your heart on fire? Yes? Well then I'm happy to oblige:

Le sigh! Isn't she amazing? Just the perfect mix of feminine whimsy and fun. From Ann Marie at la maison LaFortune. Check out her blog for more pics, including this fabulous settee's "daytime" look.
Brought to my attention from the fabulous Jannet, who owns Simple Matters, my fabulous sponsor!

And what do you think about this guy, huh? Gasp-out-loud, that's what I think! I'm loving the bold, bold color and fabrics mixed with the ornate lines. Funky fusion! From Shana and John at Junk2Funk, check them out!

Face Lift

This dresser was having a midlife crisis. Yellowed with age, broken-down handles, she was no longer turning heads, and she knew it.

So Joanne came to the rescue with a shot of furniture botox: new paint and hardware! Nothing freshens up a face faster! Now she sits in Joanne's son's bedroom, and she feels young again!

U-G-L-Y

Holy Smokes. These were quite possibly the ugliest lamps in the history of ever. If there was an "Ugly Lamp Contest" these lamps would take first and second place.

Hey! Wouldn't it be fun to have an "Ugly Lamp Contest?" I think I'm going to do just that. What do you think?

Anyhoo diddly do, check out how Elizabeth redeemed these lamps from groovy-in-a-gross-way into chic outdoor decor on her blog The Hymas Herd. Thanks Elizabeth!

A Case For Curtains

 May 25, 2010

What is a girl to do when she has big, bare windows and a small budget? Make window treatments using pillowcases! Easy as pie. Actually, easier than pie, because I've made pie before and it is an arduous, messy ordeal. Unless you get a microwave pie, but seriously, gross, and even then I bet you could shimmy some shams up on a curtain rod in the time it takes to microwave that pie, so I rest my case. Whatever my case was. Pillowcase! I need a nap.

Thanks to Lauren from Penoche Design!

Garden Dresser

You've heard of bringing the outdoors in, but what about bringing the indoors out? That's what Caroline from The Feminist Housewife did when she decided to spruce up this worn-out freebie dresser into, what else? A garden center! I can't think of a cuter way to store your gardening necessities. I may have to rethink my current storage situation, which is: a bucket. That's why nothing is growing in my garden right now except despair. Check out more on her blog HERE. Thanks Caroline!

Jack's Kitchen

Love, love, love the kiddie kitchen makeovers. This one is is from Rene at Paddywack Designs, who had a nightstand that needed a makeover, and a boy who needed a kitchen.

Love the fun details here, like the "granite" countertop, the oh-so-manly alien curtains, and the personalized pot lid. Great job Rene, looks like you'll have a future chef on your hands!

Tearing Up

 May 24, 2010

Kelly's got a good thing going on over at her blog Tearing Up Houses. She's in a constant state of buying, selling and renovating. She recently shared her revamped living room, and isn't it great? Love the colors she used, muted without being boring, and a huge leap away from the frightening terra cotta color the walls sported before.

Speaking of frightening, her old mosaic fireplace looked like an abstract artist's representation of "nightmare." Not something I want to cozy up to on a cold night, no sir. Love the new rustic mantle too. Thanks Kelley! Lots more pics to see HERE.

Table Desky Thingy

Well, I hope you had a good weekend! Did you find any chairs to redo? I hunted around Goodwill for a minute, but it was 50% off Saturday, and you know how that is ... cutthroat.

This little redo from Better After reader Stacy could very well have come from a thriftstore, or my grandparent's basement. Those retro legs are a dead giveaway! Is it a small table? Is it a really small desk?

Not sure, but after a good sanding and a few coats of paint, a fun contact paper stencil, a Mod Podged drawer liner and some lovely Anthropologie knobs, it is drab no more. What a cutie! It looks like the perfect little nightstand, or even the best play school desk a little girl could ask for. Thanks for sharing Stacy!
