Disappearing Dishwasher

Would you like to hear a scary story? Because I have one for you. It’s titled “The Case of the Portable Dishwasher and The Embarrassment It Causes Its Owners Whenever Anyone Sees Them Rolling It Across Their Kitchen and Subsequently Attaching the Nozzles to the Kitchen Sink In Order to Do a Load of Dishes Like They Are Some Kind of Cave People, Not That This Ever Happened To Me In High School When My Family Had One of These Stupid Dishwashers and My Friends Were So Confused to See No Dishwasher One Day and Then A Dishwasher Squatting in the Middle of the Kitchen Like it Ain’t No Thang the Next, But Seriously, I Just Wanted a Regular Dishwasher Like the Rest of the World.”

That’s a working title, by the way. But it does have a happy ending! Mike and Katrina are enjoying their kitchen’s layout much more after rolling their darn portable dishwasher down to the basement, where it currently serves as counterspace. Trust me, hand washing the dishes is a much better option.
The floors are the original hardwood that were hiding out under the linoleum. Mike and Katrina came up with a lot of other nifty space saving solutions for their kitchen and you can check them out on their blog At Home Alterations.

  1. I love the after. A dishwasher isn’t necessary. I handwash dishes even though we have a dishwasher. I don’t trust a machine to do something that I know I can do just fine.

  2. i chose to get rid of our dishwasher since having a family of 6 meant that it ran twice a day and we still had to wash bigger pots and pans. Don’t miss it all!

and the ‘after’ looks great too.

  3. BEAUTIFUL floors! I wonder where they found them!?

  4. This is a great transformation – the floor and the white paint have brought it up to date – so fresh and modern. Shows what a little elbow grease can get you. I love it.

  5. I will sacrifice a little style for practicality. You cannot convince me to get rid of my roll-away dishwasher! LOL! When you are pregnant, woozy, sick, standing in front of a sink of hot water to do dishes isn’t an option. I have a perfect little nook for mine.

  6. Heeeee! Great title. Wonderful makeover – I agree, hand-washing dishes in such a pretty kitchen would be well worth it. I’m sorry if you were traumatized by that rolling dishwasher, but you seem to have bounced back preeeeeetty well.
